“Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” - Hugh Latimer On October 16 1555, the grey-haired Hugh Latimer spoke these words to his young companion Nicholas Ridley, as the two Protestant Reformers were burned alive for preaching God's Pure Word in England. The Westminster Anglican Synod (Founded 2025) is the heir of this great Evangelical Anglican Witness. We strive to preserve the historic Protestant Faith, the Faith of our Fathers, in these United States for Future Generations.
From our inception, Westminster Anglican Synod stands as a as a distinct denomination and separate branch of God's Church. We have the classic Book of Common Prayer, the Westminster Confession and Catechisms, The Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, and a Presbyterian ministry.
The Westminster Anglican Synod is Protestant and Anglican. The first great aim of the Westminster Anglican Synod is the vindication of a pure, open, vernacular Bible as a common right and heritage of the laity. The Scriptures are our Sole Rule of Faith and Obedience.
The Westminster Anglican Synod Exists for the Preaching of God's Pure Infallible and Inerrant Word, the Administration of His Sacraments, the Facilitating of Christian Fellowship, and the Support of Christian Families. We believe Christian Love is the inevitable fruit of the Holy Spirit. Christian Love begins with those closest to us, with our kith and kin, our local congregation, our workplaces and schools, etc. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. - 1 John 3:14 In the Spirit of Christian Love, We stand against the Errors of Popery, Liberal Infidelity, Effeminacy, Marxism, Liberation Theology and Egalitarianism, Soul-Destroying Heresies that permeate modern society.
We are not affiliated with those who would bend the moral law, compromise with falsehood, or offer false and distorted worship to Almighty God. Under God's law there can be no “gay marriage,” no ordination of women, no Marxism, no Modernism, or anything else that has not come down to us from “the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of alteration.”
As a denomination we seek to worship and serve our risen Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Great Commission is our Supreme Ambition. The last Command of Christ is our first concern.
An important chapter in our history occurred in the 18th Century : the First Great Awakening in England and British America.
Evangelical Anglican Preachers like Augustus Toplady, Henry Venn, Daniel Rowlands, and George Whitefield boldly proclaimed the doctrines of Holy Scripture and shook the Church from its spiritual slumber. In 1783, God raised up Selina Hastings, the Countess of Huntington, to establish private chapels throughout England and Wales where the Evangelical Clergy of the English Church could preach without being harassed or impeded by the Established Prelatical Hierarchy.
After her death, these chapels continued operating outside the Established Church. Many flocked to these chapels to hear Prayer-Book Services Evangelically Read and the Gospel and Calvinist doctrines of Grace boldly proclaimed: man's depravity, God's Sovereignty, the efficacy of Christ's atoning Blood, salvation by irresistible grace alone, and how Christians can be certain of their salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. These chapels were loosely united and called the Countess of Huntington's Connexion. The Connexion, opposing Liberal Modernism and Tractarianism, preserved the Evangelical Succession of the Protestant and Reformed Church of England. The Westminster Anglican Synod is privileged to carry on this Tradition today.
George Whitefield's best friend, one of Georgia's Founding Fathers, James Habersham, an Evangelical Anglican, wrote to the Countess of Huntington pleading with her to send Evangelical Clergy to the United States,
“Your Ladyship may be assured, America affords a large Field for the propagation of the Gospel, where they are many thousand of Souls who have no teaching Priest of any kind, and would be glad to hear of a free Pardon offered to their Poor Hearts. I must therefore entreat your Ladyship to encourage some evangelical Ministers to come over, and help us."
As in 1771, so too today, There is a desperate need for biblically faithful and classically Evangelical congregations in the North America. Where God is worshiped with timeless liturgy, where the faithful are edified and strengthened by public Scripture-reading and expository preaching, where the Church is discipled by frequent catechetical training and sent out to be Evangelists, storming the battlements of Satan, overthrowing the kingdom of darkness, and extending Christ's Empire on earth with a sure certain hope of Victory.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Cor. 15:57
WAS will be a safe-haven for Reformed Christians who appreciate the timeless Liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer. As we say, "Presbyterians with Prayer-books."
We hope you will visit us and learn more about the Protestant, Reformed and Evangelical Faith of the Westminster Anglican Synod.
